Acronyms

Let me know if I’m not alone in my belief that acronyms are produced expressly to annoy the life out of anyone who suffers from dyslexia?

Recently I needed a DIY recipe for sandbags and approached my keyboard only to discover DYI did not bring up the results I desired. It made me think about how many other TLA’s I mutilate in my daily life such as the GIA or IAG (Australian Independent Groceries), PLS, APL and every other Scouting symbolism that is offered to me on a daily basis.

KPI sounds like a mattress I slept on as a kid and WTB makes me feel like someone is swearing. When asked recently if I knew what DNA stood for I naturally felt the need to impress by saying deoxyribonucleic acid.

‘No’, he shakes his head, ‘It actually stands for National Dyslexic Association.’

‘Oh’, I say none the wiser and I bet you’ve got it already but I didn’t at the time and it wasn’t until I started writing this and tapping out a couple of my most commonly confused acronyms that I realised he was telling me a joke.

Only today I was told that if I wanted to touch type then all I needed to do was practise. Now I can tell you that if this were true I would have reached that little goal a long time ago.

For me it might take a couple of life times to achieve the desired finger memory needed for such a task. If it was just going to happen from practise then it would have happened by now – surely. I remember, without fondness, all those years ago, when made to sit outside the classroom because I didn’t try hard enough and was only able to achieve 15 words per min with 30 spelling mistakes. So excuse me, kind lady, if I look oddly at you smile and change the conversation. For me approaching the keyboard is a new experience every time.

Okay that last statement was as exaggeration, I have improved, but don’t hold out on thinking there’ll come a day when I can just let my fingers to the walking while my eyes stay focused on the screen.
